PC Power & Cooling Silencer MK III 750W Review
Manufacturer: PC Power & Cooling
UK price (as reviewed): £96.81 (inc VAT)
US price (as reviewed): $139.99 (ex VAT)
OCZ subsidiary PC Power & Cooling has an immediate advantage in this test by having the cheapest 80 Plus Gold rated PSU. At a touch under £100, it has a very attractive price tag, especially when you consider Cooler Master's Bronze rated PSU retails for just £15 less. Even better, PC P&C offer a whopping seven year warranty to go with its PSU.
The Silencer MK III's white chassis immediately makes it stand out, as does the design of its modular, screw-in connections, which will provide the tightest possible fit. The 140mm intake fan is temperature controlled, and can be set via a switch on the rear to a hybrid, semi-passive mode, whereby it remains completely off until a certain internal temperature is reached.

The native cables are sleeved in black all the way into the PSU. As well as the motherboard cable, the EPS12V and ATX12V connectors are also native, so one of them will likely be left dangling uselessly in your build. The inclusion of twelve SATA connectors should satisfy even the biggest media hoarders, while four each of molex and 6+2 pin PCIe plugs should be sufficient too. Its PCIe cables are the longest on test, and along with lengthy CPU and SATA cables this PSU should have no problems being part of a full tower build. The modular cables aren't fully sleeved, instead using a flat, black data cable style similar to Cooler Master's.
Like half of the PSUs in the group, the Silencer MK III uses a single rail, with this 750W version capable of supplying up to 62A (or 744W; basically its entire capacity) on the +12V rail alone. Voltage variance on this rail is less than 2 percent, and similarly results for the two lower voltage rails demonstrate good levels of stability.
PC P&C's power supply achieves an average of 89.33 percent with a peak of 89.94 percent at 400W. Though all the other Gold certified PSUs are able to top this, these are still impressive numbers, especially for a sub-£100 model.

Unlike most of the other power supplies, the Silencer MK III exhibits its highest ripple in the 500W load test, where it has a result of 67.8mV. This level of ripple is a bit higher than the a number of the other PSUs, but it’s still a good enough result such that the vast majority of people won't have to worry about it.
The PSU uses 0.5W of power when under no load; any more than this is undesirable but it's still nothing serious. Where the unit excels is in noise production, or rather its lack thereof. Even after 20 minutes under a substantial 500W load, the semi-passive fan found no reason for itself to turn on, meaning that in all but the heaviest of workloads, you won't hear this PSU at all.
Overall, the PC Power & Cooling Silencer MK III 750W is a great power supply. As other models show, better efficiency and ripple levels are achievable, but those of the MK III are still very good. A healthy selection of long, secure cables, silent operation and a seven year warranty means that for less than £100, this PSU is easy to recommend.
